Beach Party

It’s birthday time for your little one, and you don’t have a theme yet. What to do? Well, if you live near the ocean – or even a lake – there’s always the option of having a beach party theme. I’ll tell you what we did last year for MY daughter’s party, and maybe it’ll help you with yours.

First of all, you have to send out those invitations at least three weeks before the party; gotta give those parents time to plan around it. I know as a single parent, work and family time are always at odds with each other, so the sooner the better when making plans.

Get there early. Pick out your favorite spot on the beach, preferably one with a lifeguard; of course you’ll be keeping a watchful eye on the kids, but the more people you have watching, especially in a large group, the better.

Bring as many coolers as you can, filled with water and snacks. If you’re going to be out in the sun for a while, dehydration tends to set in quickly. If you’re a user of sunscreen, don’t forget that either!

Some beaches let you set up badminton nets. They’re smaller than volleyball nets, and badminton is a blast. We did that last year, and the kids had a great time. Bring frisbees and an assortment of balls to play with. Come up with some games to play ahead of time, games that both the children and adults can play: sack races, treasure hunts, etc.

After the party, take the kids out for some ice cream. Sometimes, if a place knows you’re coming, you can get a discount for bringing in a bunch of people.

Anyway, I hope these few beach party ideas were helpful. Have a great time!

Roller Skating Party

You know, I’m actually surprised that there are still roller rinks around. Thrilled, but surprised. The more that roller skates are going the way of in-line skates, you’d almost think that the rinks would die out. Nope. So…what a great idea this year for us to have a roller skating party for my daughter!

You know how these things work, right? There’s usually video games at the rink, with a huge, circular skating area for everyone to “get down” in. Fast skaters, slow skaters, beginners, etc. It doesn’t matter at rinks, as there are all kinds.

One reason I love this idea is because there are usually sitting areas for the parents to get to know each other, complete with a concession stand for pizza, hot dogs, soda, etc.

There’s almost always a DJ there, too, who takes requests. There’s all kinds of different music being played.

Call ahead at least a month or two before the actual birthday party and see what kinds of specials they have. Try and get in before anyone else reserves the date so you can have your pick. A lot of the time they’ll give you a huge discount, depending on how many people show up. They’ll have the pizza ready at a certain time, along with cake.

The last thing I want to mention is how special the DJ makes your child feel; they’ll announce over the loudspeaker that it’s her birthday, give her a special song, etc. That sort of thing is like being on television for a kid.

And don’t worry about buying skates; you can rent them there!

Spelling Bee Birthday Party Theme

I like this idea, and I’m going to do it this year for my eight-year-old daughter. To me, a spelling bee birthday party theme is a killer idea, and one that will get the kids to learn a little while they’re having fun.

I don’t know…maybe it’s too over the top, and to aggressive of an idea for a little girl’s party, but I don’t think so.

I’ll tell you how I’m going to do it: first of all, get a bunch of notecards and write age-appropriate words on them. Seal them in envelopes and hide them all over the house, especially in places you know the kids will be in.

Every time they find an envelope, you open it. You read the words to them, and whoever finds it gets to decide which word she wants to spell. If she gets it right, she gets a prize.

But what about the other words that are in the envelope? Well, you hand those out to all of the other kids, and the same goes for them: if they get a word right, they also get a prize. But if they get a word WRONG, they will pay the price. They will be required to sit in a corner for the rest of the party and go hungry.

Not really. They just get another chance the next time an envelope is found.

If it’s going to be an all-day party, I suggest getting your hands on a copy of Akeelah and the Bee, an excellent family film about a girl in a tough part of Los Angeles competing in the Nation Spelling Bee.

Have fun!

Princess Birthday Party Theme

“Every little girl is a princess.” Has anyone ever seen the movie A Little Princess? Well, the main character says that, and if it’s in a movie – especially a GOOD one – then it must be true. This year, as my daughter turns eight years old, I’m going to have a princess birthday party theme. I’ll explain.

If you’re thinking that eight is too old, maybe you’re right. In fact, I’ve actually decided that I’m not going to do this anymore. But since I already started typing about this, I’ll engage you in a topic about what I WOULD do, had my daughter been a couple years younger, and had I thought of this marvelous idea then.

First, you want to make sure that everyone knows it’s going to actually BE a princess birthday theme – you wouldn’t want them thinking it’s a Liberace theme and show up with sequins and carrying large pianos. It could happen.

So once you let them know, all you really have to do is have a few dresses, some tiaras, and some wands (make sure you get enough for EVERYbody). And they’re extremely affordable, too; they’re usually in the party section at your local evil corporation big store. They’ll come in bags full of them.

Get some fabric and let the kids tell you what to make with it. I’d buy pastel colors, since everything in the clouds is purple and pink, you know.

Speaking of clouds, grab an old pillow you don’t want anymore and rip all the stuffing out, making it LOOK like clouds. On second thought, don’t use one of YOUR pillows for this; take your mother-in-law’s bedtime head rest and destroy it, ripping it to shreds. She’s been staying with you too long, anyway. And she knows it. Everyone knows it. She’s draining you. It’s time you stood up to her. Are you a man, or are you a little boy?

Back on topic, make sure you get little princess prizes for everyone, and get nametags. All the girls will be “Lady” something, and all the boys – should some show up – will be “Sir” something.

I think it’s a fantastic idea, and if I really even HAD a daughter, it’s what I would do.

Don’t judge me.

My Little Pony Birthday Party Theme

So you’re daughter is turning five this week, and you’re throwing the birthday party at your house. What kind of theme are you doing? What?? You don’t have a THEME? What kind of father are you, anyway? I’m joking, of course, but in my experience with my own daughter, she and her friends will get a kick out of a My Little Pony Birthday Party Theme.

Before you start thinking it’s going to be a huge hassle, just stop: it’s easy as pie. The nice thing is, a good percentage of little girls already HAVE My Little Ponies, so half of the work is already done.

What you’ll want to do is just send out invitations telling all the parents and kids that they should bring them along to the party. Of course, some kids won’t have any, but that’s where you come in. You’ll want to look around town for a bunch of extra ones so nobody gets left out. And they’re cheap if you look in the right places. Goodwill and the Salvation Army store are excellent for finding My Little Ponies for really good prices.

Scatter them all around the house so it feels like you’re surrounded by ponies. As soon as the kids start arriving, they’ll look around and love the scene.

There are plenty of games you can play with them, too: the ponies can all get ready for the ball (yes, they go to balls), they can dance around while listening to music, and they can play house. Believe me, I’ve played my share of dolls with my little one; I know how this works.

It would be great if you could afford to find enough ponies so when everyone goes home, they can take one with them. If not, it’s obviously not a big deal. But I think the kids will enjoy having a party like this. It’s different, and they’ll remember it.

iCarly Birthday Party Theme

I’m just going to say right away that I’m not sure if television shows are supposed to be in italics or surrounded by quotation marks. Or are they supposed to be underlined? I don’t care…the purpose of this article is to describe to you a “perfect” iCarly birthday party theme, and if you’re all hung up on a small thing like that, I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe join a gym.

Have you seen the show? It’s fantastic. In fact, I always say it’s “like Seinfeld, only for kids”. And without a zany character who moonlights as a racial slur advocate.

It’s a great show, and a wonderful alternative to a lot of the junk that’s out there right now. So why not design a birthday party theme around it?

It’s easy enough, really. First off, tell the other parents what you’re doing; some of them might not approve of the show. But that’s O.K., because you wouldn’t want that adults weirdo kid at the party anyway! Let him or her stay at home with his matchbook collection. That’s pretty normal.

So once the invitations are out, find out how many are coming. Buy season one on DVD as a gift for your daughter, and let her open it before anyone comes over (that way, they can watch it during the party. get it?). Go to the store and get some iCarly things, like the remote control they use, as well as other things. Wow, I’m really not being very specific, am I? O.K., then do this: take your daughter with you to the aisle of Evil Mart and ask her to show you what to get.

Back at the house, the kids can do little skits like they do on the show, and they’ll most likely have a great time doing it. They can even record themselves singing the theme song and upload it to a PRIVATE YouTube channel!

It’ll be a blast. As long as that weird kid doesn’t show up.

Barbie Birthday Party Theme

It’s time again to do something for your little girl: her birthday party is coming, and she’s turning SEVEN! Not only is seven a “big deal” for her, but it’s her Golden Birthday, so you know you have to come through. How about a Barbie birthday party theme this year?

I’m going to pretend that you’re interested. That way, I can continue writing this article.

First of all, let’s try to remember that you’re a DAD. So there will be no hiring of women that actually LOOK like Barbie; that’s not the point. The point is to allow your daughter to imagine she’s in the magical WORLD of Barbie, complete with dragons and fairies. What? You didn’t think Barbie existed in fantasy worlds? Get it together and watch the movies; they’re actually pretty good with great music and many famous actors doing some of the voices.

You’re going to need Barbie dolls, and lots of them. Don’t worry: they’re cheap. Go to Goodwill or the Salvation Army store, and you’ll find a bunch of them for less than a dollar. Plus, they will most likely have the creepy-looking generic ones that usually pass for Barbies. Usually. Boy, are they creepy, though.

Get a lot of pastel colors and put them all over the house, too. Barbie is nothing if not a pastel-loving chick.

Make sure when you send out the invitations that you specify that it will indeed be a Barbie party. Let them know they need to bring their Barbies and all of the clothes. Also, some parents aren’t really keen on the Barbie idea, so this will let them know ahead of time what they’re getting into.

Spread the Barbies all over the house. I recommend buying one Barbie for every girl who comes to the party. That way, everyone can leave with one. A gift for showing up!

They’ll love it, and your daughter will get a real kick out of it.

A Birthday Party Theme for 7 Year Olds

We all want to give our children fun birthday parties, right? I have a seven-year-old little girl, and I’d like to share with you what we did for her last birthday, and how much fun it was for us and for her friends.

First things first, though: get nametags! If you’re going to invite a bunch of kids from your child’s class – along with their parents and/or grandparents – it’s crucial that you remember everyone’s name. It’s really not too big of a task to do this, as you don’t really have to do much of the work other than purchasing them; they can write their own names. And actually, kids seem to get a kick out of making little designs with their names, anyway.

We called her party “The Royal Party”, and instead of regular invitations, we used scrolls (you can buy tan-colored paper at pretty much any computer store) and we wrote the invitations in an old-looking penmanship.

We made shields out of construction paper and swords out of cardboard covered with aluminum foil. Pictures of King Arthur, Merlin, etc., were hung from the walls and really gave it the “feel” of the Camelot days (don’t forget unicorns, especially if it’s a girl’s party!).

We made a castle out of cardboard (it’s not that difficult, really!) and put it on the ROUND table. They loved it. We took our huge dictionary out, put a cover on it, and wrote “Magic Spells” on it, opening it up to a page that looked like it was about magic.

You can find “medieval”-type music just about anywhere. Use it.

As for the food, we had huge turkey drumsticks, grapes, weird-looking bread, and cheese. Well, we also had name-brand chocolate, so it wasn’t entirely “authentic”!

I tried my best to speak as if I were from those times, but that sort of fizzled out halfway through the party! Nobody really minded, as everyone (adults included) were having a great time.

It’s a nice way to be creative and to give your seven year old a birthday party to remember!

Girls Birthday Ideas At Home

Girls are easy to plan a cute birthday party for. The hard part is deciding on which idea to use for your party. There are so many fun ideas. I am going to share with you a few good ones that have worked in the past.

We all know every little girl is a princess. No matter who’s daughter you are, you are your daddy’s little princess growing up. Having a princess themed party is a special event for a little girl. You can decorate the house in a princess theme and the pictures won’t stop when your little girl comes down the stairs in her princess dress, slippers, and wand on her big day.

Maybe your daughter is not the girly girl type and is more into playing around with her brothers. A sports idea for a party is such an easy way to plan a party. Think about it. If you daughter loves soccer, have a kickball or soccer game as the entertainment. Now that you have the main attraction planned, decorating should be easy. You can find sports decorations and gifts easily online.

Is your daughter intrigued by books? I know a few little girls that get carried away reading and have just amazing imaginations. I know they would enjoy a party themed after their favorite character they read about in the books. If the book they adore is a popular one, it will not be hard at all to get the ideas rolling. Movies, cartoons, and toys are out there for a lot of the books kids read now days.  Start chatting with your little girl about who her favorite character is and get the planning started.

Really, the ideas are ending for pulling off a party for your little girl. Whether you have a princess, soccer, or character themed party, I am sure you will find a way to make her smile at her party.
